Is it really the end of everything?
Katara was laughing exuberantly. It was the most she had laughed in months. All the tension that had been building up inside her was gone. The anger that she had felt building between her and her brother had disolved as if by magic. All that Sokka had had to do was to try to sew his socks himself.
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo Flashback oOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
It had all started that morning, when Katara had woken up in a terrible mood. She got up and went to the stream close to their camp to start washing the clothes that they had been wearing. Suddenly, she came upon a dirty pair of Sokka’s socks.
‘He could have at least tried to get them a bit cleaner before he asked me to even close to them…Really; I would think that even he would notice that they were stinky.’ Her thoughts got angrier as she thought about how selfish and annoying Sokka had been for the last few days.
‘What does he think I am…his slave? Not only does he not offer to help me, he seems to be doing everything to make this harder. As if my being a girl would is an excuse for him being lazy. “No Katara, I won’t do that because it’s woman’s work” Great, now I’m getting angry, just like when we found Aang because of my tantrum…’
Suddenly, she dropped the sock that she was washing. She was sick and tired of the way that both boys, of course more Sokka than Aang, but still, both boys treated her as a doormat, never questioning that she was the one who was supposed to do all the house.. well camp work. It didn’t seem to ever have occurred to them that she might be a bit tired of doing chores for everyone and getting nothing, not even a “Thanks!” in return.
She left their clothes, still soaking wet, on the shore of the river and had stomped back to camp, bringing only her personal effects with her. Once she reached camp, both boys were awake, waiting for her to make them breakfast. This only made her angrier. They had the cheek to want her to feed them after all that she had already done that morning. But seemingly, they hadn’t noticed that Appa couldn’t load himself, that their clothes weren’t self-cleaning and that the fire didn’t stock up on wood by itself. She made the food slowly, refusing to give into the anger that she was concealing behind her joyous features.
But when Sokka told her to hurry up because he was getting hungry, it was the last straw. Katara bended some water from her damp clothes and froze both boys in place, forcing on Sokka a bit more than necessary, she admitted to herself later. She had stalked away, almost as disgusted at her own attitude as she had been with theirs. Leaving the bewildered twosome behind her, she roamed all morning and afternoon, being careful to stay away from the villages near their camp. She practiced her bending at almost all of the streams she crossed, the anger that she had felt earlier slowly seeping out of her. Finally, the sun started setting and she made her way back to camp, ready to face her companions’ anger.
It was then that she saw the funniest thing that she had seen in her whole life. Her brother, Sokka, was lying on the ground, holding a needle in one hand and a sock in the other. From what she could see in the dimming light, he had somehow managed to tie himself up in string so tightly that he couldn’t move from his position on the ground. Aang was nowhere to be seen but she was concentrating too hard on her brother to notice anything out of the ordinary. He couldn’t budge. Katara started giggling and was soon breathless from laughing so hard. Her sides felt like they were splitting yet she was unable to stop laughing.

Wiping tears from her eyes, Katara struggled back onto her feet. She then made her way to help her unfortunate brother. Gradually, her laughter stopped. Suddenly, she froze. She had reached Sokka but he still didn’t move. He hadn’t moved an inch since she had arrived. He didn’t even look as if he was breathing. It wasn't like him to stay in such an embarrassing position and not even try to get out of it. Something was definitely wrong.
Katara reached down to touch his shoulder then shrank away in terror. Sokka’s body was cold. ‘He’s dead…Sokka is dead.’ Her brain hardly had the time to process the thought before a hand closed on her mouth and something hit her hard on the head. The last words that her pain-clouded brain understood were:
“The Avatar won’t be allowed to follow her. Bri.. her to the…..”
Katara was fighting to stay awake longer, to see if she could hear anything that might help her to identify her captors but she slowly lost grip on reality. The world spun around erratically then turned black.
She slipped into unconsciousness without a sound.
