Chapter 1
Zuko pounded at the ground trying to hold back tears. For a reason he felt as if were his fault.
“Can anything else go wrong now?” He said to himself.
His uncles limp body lay on the ground hardly breathing. One breathe… then another… one more. Zuko treasured each breath thinking that It would soon come to an end. He took his uncles hand in his. He felt the small trickle of a tear fall down his face. He wiped it away with his other hand. Another breath seized from his uncles lips. He brushed the hair back from his uncle’s face. He realized how much he hated Azula now. As he sat there he thought of his life… everything that went wrong. Everything that had been taken from him. Now one more thing would be taken. "My Uncle" thought Zuko. There was a faint sound of gravel being stepped on behind him.
“Go away!” he said thinking it was the avatar and his friends again.
He looked behind him. Instead of the avatar it was a little girl no older then ten or eleven. He wore green pants and a tan short sleeved shirt with her dark brown hair tied back in a pony tail with her bangs draped in her face.
“Are you ok?” she asked.
Zuko didn’t answer he just starred at the little girl.
“Is he ok?” she asked pointing at Zuko’s uncle on the ground.
Zuko looked at his uncle, “I’m not sure he needs help.”
The girl smiled and walked toward Zuko, “I can help follow me and bring him,” she said turning around and walking away.
For a moment Zuko thought. Should he trust the little girl? He needed to it was the only hope he had. He picked up his uncle and put his uncle arm around his own neck dragging him. The little girl looked back, her eyes glistened as the setting sun hit them. She walked back to him and took Zuko’s uncle’s other arm putting it around her own neck.
“Thank you,” Zuko said.
“You’re welcome,” she said, “go in there,” she said signaling to the only building still standing in the decrepit town.
The building was small the floor was dirt and the only thing in it was a small fire going in the corner in a small rock fire pit with another women sitting next to it. The women next to the fire looked up. Her eyes looked surprised.
“Who is this?” the other girl asked.
She was older she looked Zuko’s age. She looked a lot like the younger girl, but the only difference was that she wore her hair down and Zuko made out a slight mark of a scar on her neck it wasn’t big just a small mark on her neck hardly visible.
“He was one of the guys fighting earlier,” she said with a smile and excited.
“Really… we felt the ruble from the fight from here,” she said not to enthused.
“Sis… he needs help,” said the younger one taking Zuko’s uncle and laying him on a small green woven blanket.
The older one went over to Zuko’s uncle taking a small burlap sack.
“What happened to him?” she asked opening his eyes.
“He was hit by a bolt of fire… strong fire,” Zuko said.
“How come there isn’t any burn marks?” she asked.
“Um it was kind like an electric shock hard to explain,” he said.
The girl took out a bottle from the sack and took the cap off and poured it on a small rag then laid it on Ihro’s forehead.
“What is that?” Zuko asked.
“Don’t worry let me do this… it’ll be a little while,” she said.
“Don’t worry my sister is the best,” the little girl said.
Zuko took a deep breath hoping it was true. Zuko left the small building and walked outside to the cool air… the sun had already set. The little girl followed.
“Why were you fighting?” she asked coming up to his side.
“It’s a long complicated story,” Zuko said starring away into the distance.
“Oh… there was an explosion did you cause that?” she asked.
He looked at her, “partly… a lot of people did,” Zuko stopped and thought.
“Oh that’s cool,” the little girl said.
“Who are you… and why are you here the town is disserted,” Zuko said to the little girl.
The little girl laughed, “I’m Kamdra and that’s my sister in there Sayla… and yes the town is disserted me and my sister were just passing through,” she said.
“Oh where are you headed?” he asked.
“I’m not sure I just follow Sayla,” she said.
“Hey you two, are you hungry?” asked Sayla through the doorway to the building.
They both came in and sat by the fire. Sayla handed Zuko a small bowl of soup and a piece of bread and the same to Kamdra then herself some.
“You look like you could use a good meal,” Sayla said.
“Oh I’ve been traveling for awhile… thank you,” he said.
“You’re welcome… we don’t have much to spare but what we have, you can have,” said Sayla.
Zuko took a sip of the soup. It was delicious he savored it in his throat. He dipped the bread in it then ate the bread he started to eat faster and faster. Kamdra giggled.
“Slow down you won’t fill up as quickly if you eat slowly,” Sayla said.
Zuko stopped and took a deep breath. He started to eat again but this time much slower. In between bites he looked over at his uncle on the blanket. He couldn’t look away.
“He’s going to be fine… he’s strong, he won’t give life up so easly,” Sayla said.
“I know he’s strong,” Zuko said.
