Character Bios:
Tahn
This is an Earth Kingdom refugee heading to Ba Sing Se with his family. He is a jolly man who is always happy to say hello to fellow refugees. Tahn has been traveling for months up the west coast of the Earth Kingdom with his wife and sister. The three of them fled from their home in the south after their village was raided by the Rough Rhinos. Tahn and his wife, Ying, crossed paths with Zuko in Book 2 Earth - Chapter 7 – they are the couple Zuko stumbles across in the opening scene.
Ying
This is Tahn's wife. She is surprisingly nice to be around even though she is nine months pregnant. She is a very optimistic woman – hopeful about what the future will bring for her and her family.
Hope
This is Ying and Tahn's new born baby girl that Ying gives birth to on the Serpent's Pass. When Aang sees how happy and hopeful the baby makes them, he remembers how he feels about Appa.
Jet and The Freedom Fighters
Jet – The inspirational leader of the freedom fighters and an amazing warrior, Jet is young, handsome and smooth-talking, but he's also a misdirected teenager who often goes too far. Jet's parents were killed by the Fire Nation when he was eight, and since then his vengeance has driven him to extreme lengths to defeat the Fire Nation. His willingness to sacrifice human lives to score a victory against the Fire Nation is directly opposed to Aang's respect for all life. Jet is also an expert fighter with hook swords. The Freedom Fighters are a rag-tag group of kids who do what they can to fight the Fire Nation. Planning their attacks from a secret treetop hideout, these kids are very skilled woodsmen who communicate with bird calls to avoid detection. Ever since the Fire Nation took over a nearby town, the freedom fighters have been cutting off Fire Nation supply lines and using all available means to sabotage their occupation. They are all wanted by the Fire Nation.
Suki
The eldest of the village warriors, Suki is in charge of training the younger warriors. She began her training when she was only 8 years old. She is a tough fighter who has a soft spot for Sokka.
The Serpent
This giant, amphibious reptile lives in the waters near the Serpent's Pass. The serpent is able to move through the water undetected – this helps him to get close to his prey before attacking. At over 100 feet long, this scaly creature is just as ferocious as it looks and it is known to let out an extremely loud, blood-curdling scream just before it attacks. The serpent lives mostly on fish and other water creatures but it will attack and eat just about anything – it has even been known to attack ships when looking for a meal.
Cabbage Slug
This tiny slug, able to quickly reproduce, can destroy entire cabbage patches in less than a week. These pests are sometimes hard to spot because they actually bore holes into the cabbages and eat them from the inside out -- by the time you realize they're there, it can be too late.
The Serpent’s Pass
Also known as the "Deadly" Serpent's Pass, this is the only sliver of land connecting the Southern Earth Kingdom to the Northern Earth Kingdom – and the only way to get to Ba Sing Se by foot. It is a dangerous land passage that cuts through a large lake – it separates the Eastern Earth Kingdom controlled side from the Western Fire Nation controlled side – and the pass is named for a large serpent that lives in the waters near there. There are areas of the pass that are high above the water, with steep cliffs on either side, or other parts that are actually submerged into the lake. Many years ago, the Serpent's pass was the only way for refugees to get from the Southern Earth Kingdom to Ba Sing Se. But today there is a less dangerous route – ferries shuttle refugees across the Earth Kingdom controlled Eastern Lake.
Waterfall Pond
On the northern outskirts of the desert, this waterfall pond is a delight for travelers who have spent many days in the hot, dry desert. The Waterfall pond is a fresh water pond that that has a large, tiered cliff on one side where a waterfall dumps into the pond. It is great place to drink a little fresh water or even to take a bath. But possibly the best thing about this place are the high tiers that can be used as diving boards to jump into the water.
Waterbending Bomb
This is a lot like our version of a cannonball -- except with the additional power of Waterbending. The splash created from a Waterbending bomb can often be seen from hundreds of yards away. In fact, when Katara does it, she manages to make a splash so big, she empties the pond.
Ferry
This is a large boat that ferries refugees from one side of the lake to the other. The ferries take about a day to cross the lake and, unfortunately for the refugees, the food on the ferries is usually not that good – just some rotten meat and moldy bread. The ferry has an upper deck, where the captain and his men control the ship (and eat like kings) and also a lower deck that is crowded with refugees.
War Minister Qin
Originally appearing in Book 1 Water - Chapter 17, the War Minister is assigned the task of finding and developing new weapon technologies for the Fire Lord. His relationship with the Mechanist at the Northern Air Temple produced many such weapons, with the War Minister providing constant threats to hurry their development. For several years, War Minister Qin has been developing the massive drill used to attack Ba Sing Se. Despite being defeated twice by the Avatar, the War Minister is still a valuable part of the Fire Lord's cabinet due to the technological advancements he has brought to his country.
General Sung
This Earth Kingdom officer is the man in charge of protecting the wall, and the man the kids run to with warnings of the Fire Nation drill. General Sung was promoted to general very recently, and is hilariously unqualified to defend Ba Sing Se. An eloquent speaker but a poor commanding officer, General Sung will try to talk his way out of most problems and leave the real work to those who know what they're doing.
Fire Nation drill
Originally designed by the Mechanist at the Northern Air Temple, this metal drill was created for the sole purpose of penetrating Ba Sing Se. It took Fire Nation laborers over two years to construct.
The drill is larger than some villages. It's so big that it actually houses an entire brigade of Fire Nation engineers, who are needed to make repairs and clean out the pipelines. Several metal support beams connect the protective outer shell of the drill to its engine inside. As the drill digs into an earthen structure, the rock is chewed up and turned into SLURRY – a disgusting mixture of rock and water that is dispensed into pipes and dumped out of the rear of the drill.
Ba Sing Se Monorail
The monorail was the brainchild of Earth King Yi Ming – an ingenious, but impatient ruler who was tired of having to spend two full days traveling from one end of his city to the other. He tasked his royal engineers with finding a solution to his traveling woes: "I want a faster traveling way! Make it so." The result is the best mass-transit system in the entire world. Nobody has public transportation that's faster, more efficient, or safer. And it's all powered by Earthbending!
Long Feng
The leader of the Dai Li and the de facto leader of Ba Sing Se, Long Feng is a power-hungry, manipulative advisor to the Earth King, the very definition of "the man behind the man." Born as the son of a merchant in the Middle Ring, Long Feng transcended his relatively humble origins to become the most feared man in the city. As the war with the Fire Nation spread and refugees began pouring into Ba Sing Se in greater and greater numbers, Long Feng decided to keep all information relating to the war away from the Earth King, thereby appointing himself the sole dictator in matters relating to international affairs. Even the Council of Generals could not break through his stranglehold on the Royal Palace, cowed by Long Feng's secret police. Long Feng created the secret prison beneath Lake Laogai where he could stash anyone in the city who dared to stand against him, and developed the brainwashing techniques that disabled his foes.
Joo Dee
Trained by the Cultural Authority of Ba Sing Se (the Dai Li) to be a guide for important visitors to the city. Her robotic, cheery demeanor, mechanical mannerisms, and tendency to hold the party line when talking about the official political practices of Ba Sing Se are the result of brainwashing by the Dai Li, under orders from their commander, Long Feng. In general, she exists to neutralize unwanted outside influences.
Bosco
The Earth King's favorite pet, this rare "bear" was captured in the forests along the eastern coast of the Earth Kingdom. He is the only known member of his species, although the Earth King has commanded the top zoologists of Ba Sing Se University to lead a battalion of soldiers in scouring the earth to find Bosco a mate. Little is known about his habits in the wild, but Bosco seems to enjoy roaming the grounds of the Royal Palace with his master, and has developed quite a taste for cakes and pies.
Ba Sing Se University
The greatest university in the world, at least according to its enrollment materials, the BSSU campus is a major landmark in the Middle Ring of Ba Sing Se. Once a great warehouse of knowledge for the citizens of Ba Sing Se, since the ascent of Long Feng the academic offerings of BSSU have become somewhat tainted, especially in the areas of current events and political science. Still, it stands as a major achievement of engineering, architecture, and science, especially in its famed Kim Astrology Tower and the two-acre Mung-Yi Research Koi Pond.
Royal Palace
This tiered compound of towers, gardens, shrines, and courts has been the home of the Earth Kings since Ba Sing Se was constructed. Only servants and the highest-ranking citizens of Ba Sing Se are allowed entry, and even they are never permitted to enter the Royal Shrine located at the center of the palace grounds, which is for the Earth King and his wives alone.
Spark Rocks
These tools used by Earth Kingdom citizens to start fires are mined from cliffs found south of Ba Sing Se, known as the Fighting Cliffs. The cliffs, one white and one red, face each other with a wide ravine between them, and early Earth Kingdom peoples noticed that the ground of the ravine was charred and black. Legend says that the cliffs were created in an ancient battle between Earthbenders and Firebenders, and that the conflict was so awesome that the very ground they fought on soaked up their power and animosity.
