------------------------------------------------------------------------Nickelodeon has greenlit a third season of "Avatar: The Last Airbender," television's No. 1 animated series among boys 9-14.
The kids network has ordered up 20 new episodes to begin airing next year, bringing the series total to 60. Current season ranks first among kids 2-11 and averages a strong 946,000 tween viewers in its 8 p.m. Friday time period.
"Avatar" centers on 12-year-old Aang, a boy torn between fulfilling his fate as the long-awaited Avatar and wanting to be a regular kid. The reluctant hero is called upon to lead the fight against the vicious Fire Nation to restore balance in his war-torn world.
"'Avatar' continues to be one of our top shows with kid and tween audiences who keep tuning in for the layered storylines and incredible, animated martial arts," said exec VP of development and original programming Marjorie Cohn.
In the upcoming third season, Aang will confront his biggest enemy yet, and finally face off against the evil Fire Lord.
Original one-hour movie "The Fury of Aang" is slated to premiere July 14 followed by "Secret of Fire Nation," a second one-hour specspec, on Sept. 15.
"Avatar" launched in February 2005. Creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko exec produce.
